New Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren joined the show to talk about a number of NFL issues.
Dan asked Holmgren if both quarterbacks Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn would be in training camp.
"I won't tell you that right now," Holmgren said. "Theyr'e both here right now. We'll see how it goes. I'm not a big believer in that competition stuff.
"We better make up our mind before we go to camp and then put our resources into one guy."
Holmgren also explained why he retained Eric Mangini in Cleveland.
"Eric and I had a number of discussions and once I was sold on how he did things, his approach, how we hit it off and how I figured we could work together, then I made my decision," Holmgren said. "I think it would have been really unfair of me to make any of those decisions prior to our having those meetings and so I tried purposely not to do that."
Holmgren said he didn't want the players' input, because they're too emotional at the end of a season. "I purposely didn't ask any players," Holmgren said.
Holmgren also explained the contract situation with Josh Cribbs.
"There appeared to be some animosity there before I even got here and then when I got here the first couple of days it hit the press that this is going to blow up," Holmgren said. "Josh is under contract for three more years. A lot of that in my opinion was kind of posturing, the stuff that goes on in these contracts.
"Now I've kind of got things in order a little bit and so I reached out to their representatives even though I'm not going to be the point man in negotiations.I wanted them to know we wanted him here. Let's start clean. Let's have a reasonable negotiation on both sides and we try and get this thing done."
Dan asked Holmgren if he would give Brett Favre a deadline to decide if he's coming back.
"I wouldn't," Holmgren said. "We would have a good conversation. I would expect him to be honest with me. But I think now that he's earned the right to think about this."
Holmgren said he'd want to know in a somewhat timely fashion, but he wouldn't push too hard.
Holmgren also talked about his former team in Seattle. He said that he thought for a while he might take over there as president. But he's happy he ended up in Cleveland. Nevertheless, he said Seattle is a wonderful place to live. But that organization has had a lot of turnover and might face some challenges.
Holmgren said Pete Carroll at least has a veteran quarterback in Matt Hasselbeck, even if he doesn't have a lot of years left. "You're in a much better situation than a lot of teams, because you have a proven quarterback," Holmgren said. |
