Did Jason Varitek hold on to the ball long enough? AP
People are making compelling arguments that the Angels' Reggie Willits should have been safe after the Red Sox's Jason Varitek dropped the ball in Game 4.
A guy who went to umpire school said the ump should have waited to make sure he had the ball securely to call him out.
Dan's big issue -- why is there a double-standard between an out in the outfield when a guy makes a catch and then hits the ground and the ball pops out? There should be a uniform rule all over the field in every situation.
Turns out the DP Show producer Patrick "Seton" O'Connor is only a vegetarian. There's a difference. For the record, that's a veggie burger on his plate.

Here is what Curt Schilling said in his blog about Angels pitcher John Lackey's postgame comments ...
I don’t know John Lackey beyond a few conversations. He seems to be a real nice guy and he’s a damn good pitcher. I heard his comments last night and before commenting there is one real important piece of information many members of the media fail to acknowledge, downplay or just refuse to admit.
Sound bites taken after a game are dangerous. As the author of WAY MORE than I should have been, I can tell you that regardless (speaking about a pitcher of course) of the amount of time between me leaving the game and the interview I am still ‘processing’ the game and very much ‘in the moment’. Emotions for me are raw for days after a game, much less an hour or two. You ask me about something that I’m upset/fired up or/excited about and many times I will give an emotional and probably more times than I would like to admit, irrational, response.
I am not making excuses, I’ll stand by everything I’ve said, apologize for my screw ups and move on.
That being said I disagree with his comments. The better team ALWAYS wins in October. Like it or not the better team wins, always. I don’t care what your regular season record is, it means zero other than to determine where we are playing.
He was mad, their season was over, it happens and I completely understand his emotional response. Don’t put too much stock in it. Fact of the matter is the better team won and he got out pitched, twice. I don’t care about ‘bloopers’ or the ‘field effects’, both pitchers started even, Jon out pitched him. October has never been, and never will be about pitching good. October demands pitching great, pretty much every inning of every game. Good gets you early tee times. Great gets you a ring. He knows this because he was that guy in 2002.
Yesterday Dan said to Terry Francona, "guess who's on the SI cover." Francona thought it was him. But it was Manny. Great cover if you haven't seen it yet.

What up Dan Nation? Ready for some baseball? Tim McCarver and John Smoltz join the show to preview the league championship series.
McCarver got his postseason coverage off to an interesting start by criticizing the Dodgers' Manny Ramirez.
"It's extraordinary -- the dichotomy between what he was in Boston and what he is in Los Angeles," McCarver told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Talk about wearing out your welcome in a town, and it was a long welcome with the Red Sox. But some of the things he did were simply despicable -- like not playing, refusing to play. Forgetting what knee to limp on. And now it's washed, it's gone."
Manny's exit from Boston is still a hot topic. Do you agree with McCarver? Today's poll asks if you'd want Manny on your team.
We'll also get into all the big baseball topics and some NFL and college football today. Once again, should be a very intriguing show.

Reggie Miller is miserable because his Angels lost last night. So Dan distracted him with several other topics. Here's some of what Dan and Reggie hit on today.
1. Reggie, Marv Albert and Charles Barkley are calling the Nuggets-Suns outdoor preseason game on Saturday. Dan and Reggie wondered if Charles would be able to handle the heat. I love the Suns photo to the right. Not just for the cheerleader. Look how serious the Gorilla is.
2. Dan and Reggie talked about playing outdoors at Venice Beach. After Reggie become a pro, he couldn't really go there, because guys go for it there and would cause problems.
3. Reggie thinks Manny Ramirez won't take a ring from the Red Sox, but he'll definitely take his playoff share.
4. Reggie defended Reggie Bush to a certain extent. Based on last night, Bush is clearly capable of being a real weapon in the NFL.
5. Reggie is very upset about several things that happened in the Angels-Red Sox series. The blown suicide squeeze, lack of production from most of the lineup and the decision to start John Lackey in Game 1.
Terry Francona's Red Sox take on the Rays in the ALCS. AP
Dan Red Sox manager Terry Francona if Manny Ramirez would get a ring if the Red Sox win the World Series. Francona said yes, he thinks anyone who played an inning for the Sox gets a ring. Can you imagine that ring ceremony?
Francona also weighed in on the Red Sox-Angels series. Tito says he thinks the umpire made the right call on the Jason Varitek tag or Reggie Willits in the win over the Angels last night. But he doesn't blame Mike Scioscia for arguing. As a manager, you have to go for every call you think you can possible affect.
Francona also had interesting things to say about the Rays, who swept the Red Sox twice in Tampa. He said he's seen this kind of success coming. In the past, the Sox had taken advantage of Tampa Bay's flaws, like a weak bullpen. But the Rays don't have those holes any more. This transformation happened quickly -- faster than even the Rays might have expected.
Dan thinks Francona is very underrated as a manager. The current Red Sox is more in the mold of the late 1990s Yankee teams. Solid. Not huge stars, but all-around good players who play hard.
ASHWAUBENON — If you have some spare cash and are looking for that final piece of Brett Favre memorabilia to complete your collection, the former Green Bay Packers quarterback’s home is on the market.
There’s no “for sale” sign in front of the ranch-style home at 2085 Shady Lane, at the corner of Shady Lane and Morris Avenue, but it’s listed by local real estate agency Micoley and Company for $475,000. The nearly 3,000-square-foot home includes four bedrooms and three baths, according to Micoley’s Web site.
Brown County land records indicate the home’s value at $424,900. D.L. Tynes is named the property’s owner, and tax bills are sent to a Hattiesburg, Miss., address. Tynes is Deanna Favre’s maiden name. The Favre family’s permanent home is in Hattiesburg.
Real estate agent Wade Micoley wouldn’t confirm who owns the house, but said it’s been on the market for about 48 to 72 hours.
“I really can’t get into any more than that,” he said.
The sale is one of the final pieces of the Favre retirement drama that gripped Green Bay for much of late summer.
Favre visited the Green Bay area in August, when he came out of retirement. After it briefly looked like he might return to Green Bay, he was traded to the New York Jets.
But his footprint remains in the neighborhood. A driver called out “He’s in New York now,” to a reporter in the neighborhood on Thursday.
Washington running back Clinton Portis did his best Lou Holtz impersonation with Dan. He wants the 4-1 Redskins to stay under the radar and has nothing but nice things to say about his opponents. Portis says his team has been underappreciated since he got there and he likes that.
Portis even said Washington's Jason Campbell is the fourth-best quarterback in the NFC East behind Eli Manning, Tony Romo and Donovan McNabb.
I believed everything Portis said, until he started talking about how dangerous the Rams were. Portis is a veteran and went out of his way to avoid bulletin board material. But praising the Rams? C'mon.
Paulie pointed out Portis is about the same size as Reggie Bush, but Portis is a great example of a small back who can run between the tackles. Who would you rather have?
