Get Out Of Jail Free

By David Fleming

"The Olympics are bad for business, `cause no one's going to jail," says Jennifer M. Greene, of Free at Last Bail Bonds, located just two rail stations away from the King Memorial and across the street from Atlanta's pretrial detention center.

But Greene and her co-workers at Free at Last, a nationwide, 24-hour service, have no misgivings about the rather ironic name of their establishment, which they claim is supported by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a group founded at King's Ebenezer Church in 1957. "No one's ever said a single thing to us," explained Greene. "We're black owned and operated. And all of our clients are black. Blacks make up 70 percent of the jail population, or haven't you heard? But right now we don't have any clients.

"What we want is for the Olympics to be over, so business goes back to normal."

I'll say this for Atlanta, this town never ceases to amaze.
