David Ortiz - Ortiz homered for the third...
David OrtizOrtiz homered for the third straight game during a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday night. Ortiz is scheduled to play his last rehab game with Pawtucket on Sunday afternoon and then join Double-A Portland on Monday for three more games. The Boston Red Sox slugger has been sidelined since May 30 because of a partially torn tendon sheath in his wrist. He is expected to return to the Red Sox for the home series with the Yankees on July 25.
Gary Matthews Jr.Matthews has a slight tear in his left knee, but there are no plans to perform surgery or place him on the disabled list. The switch-hitting Matthews, hitting .235 with seven homers and 34 RBIs in 89 games, had an MRI on his knee Thursday and met with team doctors Saturday. He irritated the patellar tendon in his left knee last September, knocking him out of the Angels' AL division series against the Red Sox, and the knee has bothered him most of this season. Matthews has started only one of the last seven games and is 5-for-36 with one RBI since June 27.
Juan CastroThe Baltimore Orioles on Saturday acquired veteran infielder Juan Castro from the Colorado Rockies in a minor league trade and immediately purchased his contract from Class AAA Norfolk. Baltimore has had trouble filling the hole at shortstop since trading Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros in the offseason, using Luis Hernandez, Brandon Fahey, Alex Cintron, Oscar Salazar and Bynum.
Adam LoewenOrioles left-hander Adam Loewen has abandoned his career as a pitcher because of a stress fracture in his left elbow, the same injury that sidelined him last season and twice put him on the disabled list this year. Loewen, 24, intends to return to the majors as an outfielder. Had Loewen opted for a second operation on his elbow, it would have taken him at least 18 months to return. And there was no guarantee he would be pain-free or would not re-injure himself.
Pedro MartinezThe New York Mets are having second thoughts about letting right-hander Pedro Martinez face the Philadelphia Phillies next week. Martinez got a cortisone shot for strained groin muscles on Thursday. Manager Jerry Manuel originally planned to let the 36-year-old pitcher face the Phillies on Tuesday, the first game of their series at Shea Stadium, if he didna??t have any discomfort during his bullpen session. On Saturday, Manuel said Martinez might be held back until next weekend even if he feels good.
Omar VizquelSan Francisco Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel had to leave Saturdaya??s game against Milwaukee in the sixth inning with an apparent foot injury. Vizquel was batting against Brewersa?? reliever Mitch Stetter when the 41-year-old shortstop fouled a ball off his left foot. He winced in pain and dropped to the ground before a team trainer and manager Bruce Bochy came out to check on him. Vizquel eventually got to his feet and finished his at-bat, drawing a walk before being replaced by pinch-runner Ivan Ochoa.
Johnny DamonNew York Yankees left fielder Johnny Damon moved closer to returning to the lineup after taking batting practice prior to Saturdaya??s 4-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Damon was placed on the disabled list on July 6, two days after he sprained his left shoulder while crashing into the wall trying to make a catch. He spent the All-Star break at the Yankeesa?? minor league complex in Tampa, Florida and hit off a tee on Friday. New York manager Joe Girardi said Damon could return to the lineup without having to play in a minor league rehab game.
Jared Burton - Jared Burton, who developed...
Jared BurtonJared Burton, who developed into one of the Cincinnati Reds' most dependable setup relievers, went on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained muscle in his right side. Manager Dusty Baker said Burton was bothered by the injury when he threw on Friday night. The Reds called up right-hander Todd Coffey to take Burtona??s spot in the bullpen.
Brett MyersMyers rejoined the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday after starting four games in the minor leagues trying to shake a season-long slump. Myers has not been activated, but hea??s expected to start one of the Philliesa?? games next week against the Mets in New York. Despite being sent to the minors on July 1, Myers still leads the majors this season with 24 home runs allowed. The Philsa?? opening day starter is 3-9 with an ERA of 5.84, and theya??re 1-11 in his past 12 games.
Daric BartonBarton smacked his head on the bottom of a pool during the All-Star break, requiring six staples to close the gash and leaving the Oakland first baseman with a neck strain that landed him on the disabled list Saturday. The Athletics recalled infielder Wes Bankston from Triple-A Sacramento and started him at first base against the New York Yankees.
Ryan FreelFreel will have surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn tendon that attaches to the bottom of his right hamstring. Freel went on the disabled list on June 4 after he injured the hamstring. It's unclear how long he will need to recover from the surgery. Freel batted .298 with six steals in 48 games, including 26 starts. He lost his starting job in center field to Corey Patterson during spring training. Freel makes $3 million this season and has a base salary of $4 million in 2009.
Dallas BradenThe Oakland Athletics moved Braden into their rotation. Braden, who had been pitching in relief, will replace Joe Blanton in the rotation. Blanton was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday for three minor leaguers. Braden is slated to start Tuesday night at Tampa Bay. He is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA over eight appearances with the A's this season, all in relief.
Bobby CrosbyThe Oakland Athletics activated Crosby from the disabled list Friday. Crosby, who had been sidelined since July 3 with a strained left hamstring, was in the starting lineup against the Yankees. He was hitting .260 with four homers and 38 RBIs before landing on the DL for the sixth time in his career.
Hank BlalockThe Texas Rangers came out of the All-Star break on Friday with a familiar face playing a familiar position, as Blalock was activated from the disabled list and returned to his original position of third base Friday against Minnesota. Blalock, who has hit .299 with three homers and seven RBIs in 22 games this season, first went on the disabled list after tearing his left hamstring while running out a double against the Twins on April 25. He also had surgery to relieve carpal tunnel syndrome in his right hand, and his stay on the sidelines was extended when he had a setback during a rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma.
