Warden Report Favre, Packers returning to past form
Ryan E. Houston, Special to CNNSI.com I thought long and hard about how to start this off, but all I keep thinking about is how my beloved Packers are looking so dominate. Oh I know, I would hardly call the Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins stiff competition myself, but regardless, it sure feels good to see Brett Favre back to MVP form. Speaking of Favre, let's look at some players who were drafted in Round 1 and see how they are doing. I built a spreadsheet of sorts using our pre-season EDA, ADP and HDP lists. For those avid Asylum addicts you are probably quite familiar with these useful tools. Basically it is broken down by the Average Draft Position (ADP). This was figured out by analyzing over 250 drafts during the preseason and compiling it into a spreadsheet. Current Ranking (CR) is where that player is currently ranked in regards to that position. Overall Ranking (OR) is the position of where that player is currently ranked overall at any position.
Who would have ever imagined that players named Chris Weinke, Jay Fiedler, Chris Chandler and Tim Couch would have been in the top 20 during the preseason? The most interesting player representation on this list was Jon Kitna. I had a difficult time finding him ranked on any of our preseason lists, basically because he didn't meet the criteria. In our pre-eason EDA and ADP lists you had to be picked in a set number of drafts to be listed. I found, while doing this research, that Jon Kitna didn't meet that criteria and was even undrafted in most 16-team Leagues. Who would have thought?
Quarterbacks: Start 'em1. Peyton Manning: You better hope your opponent doesn't have him this week.2. Donovan McNabb: Makes things happen on offense with few talented weapons. 3. Brett Favre: Has got something going with Schroeder and Freeman. 4. Rich Gannon: We know he's better than his 125 yards passing a week ago. 5. Trent Green: Will he finally break out of his funk against the Redskins? 6. Jeff Garcia: Something tells me the Jets aren't very good. 7. Brian Griese: Hard to sit a guy with such a hot hand regardless of who he plays. 8. Kurt Warner: See comments above. 9. Mark Brunell: The Browns defense is solid, but the Jags will rely on Mark this week. 10. Aaron Brooks: Hopefully he can shake off the rust and return to form. 11. Brad Johnson: The loss of Robert Griffith really hurts the Vikings secondary. 12. Daunte Culpepper: I don't think they will win, but you have to start him. 13. Doug Flutie: Hard for me to imagine I would have ever watched a Bengals-Chargers game. 14. Jay Fiedler: He has proven a lot in the past two weeks. 15. Jon Kitna: I'm going to give him some "mad props" this week!!
Quarterbacks: Sit 'em1. Matt Hasselbeck: So Mr. Holmgren says it not Matt's fault ... interesting!2. Patriots QB: This will be embarrassing for whomever gets the starting nod. 3. Kerry Collins: The Saints will take three weeks worth of frustration out on him. 4. Vinny Testaverde: Not a bad matchup but hasn't done anything this year. 5. Tony Banks: From waiver wire to starting quarterback. Not the answer.
Running wildThis week I wanted to collaborate a bit for the running back portion of the report. As some of you know, we at the Asylum are very pleased to have Randy Moyer working with us Exclusively. Randy is one of the top running back reporters in the FF community and we are very glad to have him as part of our team. I wanted to give you a sneak peak into what he provides to our site on a weekly basis. Check it out.
Catching onThrough Week 2, some surprises still remain atop the top 25 WR list. As the trend continues you notice that some of these guys were probably on your waiver wire after week 1 of the NFL season. Here is a synopsis using Fantasy League Manager (FLM) Software. Players are sorted by Average Fantasy Points Per Game:
Couple things to watch: Troy Brown, Patriots: He was putting up some solid numbers early on. The loss of Drew Bledsoe will really hurt this guy and I don't expect him to keep putting up anywhere near the numbers he has been without Drew in the lineup. James Thrash, Eagles: How many of you had this guy on your bench in Week 2 because of his horrific performance in Week 1? That is what I thought. Watch this situation closely. I'm not ready to call him a must start, but another game like that one and there will be no doubt. Rod Smith, Broncos: Something tells me this is about to change. He can't be that open every week when he is the only "true" weapon they have. Johnnie Morton, Lions: Putting up some very solid numbers despite an awful QB situation in Detroit. Could have a breakout season. Marcus Robinson, Bears: Where have you been the last 16 months? Looks fully recovered from a back injury and could work some magic in Chi-Town. A great player that needs to stay healthy to be a dominant Fantasy Football contributor.
Wide Receivers: Start 'em1. Marvin Harrison: He will USE Ty Law this weekend.2. David Boston: He sure did look good against a GREAT Broncos team. 3. Jimmy Smith: Could have similar numbers to those of Week 1. 4. Keyshawn Johnson: I like his matchup this week. Could dominate the Vikes secondary. 5. Jerome Pathon: They are going to score A LOT of points in Indy this week. 6. Tim Brown: Who is worse: The Patriots or The Seahawks? 7. Cris Carter: Has to prove he is the leader of this team. 8. Randy Moss: Has to prove he can run routes!!! 9. Antonio Freeman: Looks like he has chemistry with the Favre once again. 10. Terrell Owens: He is a Monday Night-type guy! 11. Eric Moulds: Will he finally wake up this week? 12. Amani Toomer: They may be playing catch-up in this one. 13. Bill Schroeder: I like that slant pattern they are running with him. 14. Rod Smith: I would start him, but don't expect a lot out of him. 15. Oronde Gadsden: Fiedler seems to look for him early and often.
Wide Receivers: Sit 'em1. Derrick Alexander: He will play. He won't play. Make up your mind.2. Darrell Jackson: Hasn't done anything yet and won't against Woodson. 3. Tony Martin: Out 2-4 weeks according to published reports. 4. Joey Galloway: No chance vs. the Eagles. 5. Rams WRs: I believe this will be the Marshall Faulk dump-off show!
