Fantasy Player Projections

New England Patriots
Monster Park | Sunday, October 05 | 4:15 p.m. EST (CBS)
Pick: Patriots 27, 49ers 24
San Francisco 49ers
Pos.PlayerProjection
QBMatt Cassel
200 pass yards, 1 pass TD, 1 INT
Cassel remains the starting QB heading into this week's game at San Francisco, but rookie Kevin O'Connell could step in if the offense doesn't move the ball. Cassel was a top free agent pickup after Week 1, but this offense is so conservative now that he's not a worthy starting option even for Brady owners. Cassel has yet to top 165 yards passing and has only two TDs, but with two weeks of practice he should have his best game of the season by the Bay.
RBLaurence Maroney
1 rec, 10 rec yards, 80 rush yards, 1 rush TD
Maroney practiced this week after being inactive in Week 3 and should regain the starting job. He has been a fantasy bust thus far, rushing for only 67 yards through three games, but the Niners rank 21st against the run so look for Maroney to see his most extensive action of the year. Start him this week and hope the turnaround begins now.
RBSammy Morris
2 rec, 10 rec yards, 20 rush yards, 1 rush TD
Morris started at RB in Week 3 vs. Miami and was so ineffective that Maroney is back in the starting role. Over the last two weeks, Morris has 17 carries for 27 yards. Look for a goal-line score this week at San Francisco, but that's it.
WRRandy Moss
5 rec, 80 yards, 1 TD
Has Moss quit on this season already? It sure looks like that way as he has only four catches for 47 yards and no TDs over the last two games. He needs to step up in a big way this week at San Francisco and help out his young QB and not listen to those Raiders fans who will be on hand just to harass him.
WRWes Welker
6 rec, 60 yards
While it's obvious that Welker also misses Tom Brady, at least he's still doing everything possible to keep the chains moving. Although he has yet to score this year, Welker does have 19 catches in three games for 178 yards. Look for similar results this week at San Francisco as the Patriots try to grind out a win on the road.
WRJabar Gaffney
2 rec, 20 yards
After failing to catch a single pass during the first two games, Gaffney came through in Week 3 with six catches for 51 yards and a TD. Should you expect similar numbers this week and each week going forward? Probably not, even though teams will continue to double-team Moss, so keep Gaffney on your reserve roster this week.
TEBenjamin Watson
3 rec, 20 yards
Watson continues to ease back into the lineup after off-season knee surgery and he played 11 of the 61 snaps in Week 3, with David Thomas playing the rest of the way. Look for the two tight ends to split reps this week, which means that Watson still isn't worthy to start for fantasy owners just yet.
KStephen Gostkowski
3 PATs, 2 FGs
The No. 1 kicker selected on draft day, Gostkowski, is averaging over 8 points per game through three weeks and should stay on that pace this week at San Francisco.
Defense
2 sacks, 1 INT
This aging defense has only three takeaways and six sacks through the first two games and will need to pressure young QB J.T. O'Sullivan to win on the road this week.
Pos.PlayerProjection
QBJ.T. O'Sullivan
210 pass yards, 1 pass TD, 1 INT
O'Sullivan isn't a top-notch fantasy QB yet, but he's become a nice waiver wire pickup thus far. He threw for 257 yards and a TD in the 31-17 loss at New Orleans last week and is already averaging over 240 yards per game. The Patriots, however, rank 12th against the pass and will provide a tough matchup in Week 5. Keep Sullivan on your bench if the bye week allows that.
RBFrank Gore
4 rec, 35 rec yards, 110 rush yards, 2 rush TD
After picking up a rushing TD in each of his first three games, Gore was limited to a two-point conversion reception last week in the 31-17 loss at New Orleans. Gore has 369 yards in four games and should be salivating this week after watching tape of Ronnie Brown scoring five TDs in Week 3 at New England. Look for the Niners to pound the ball with Gore as he should top 100 yards for the second time this year.
RBDeShaun Foster
1 rec, 5 rec yards, 10 rush yards
Foster remains Gore's backup, but he rarely sees the playing time. Leave him on your waiver wire for now.
WRIsaac Bruce
4 rec, 75 yards, 1 TD
Bruce has now caught TD passes in each of the last two games and is averaging over 20 yards per reception. However, he still has only 11 receptions in four games and the Niners will likely run the ball more often than they pass it this week. Still, Bruce is a worthy play each week as Mike Martz will continue to feature him in the passing attack.
WRArnaz Battle
4 rec, 45 yards
After catching just eight passes during the first three games, Battle busted loose for seven receptions and 120 yards last week at New Orleans. Most of his catches came during garbage time, but it's still good to see Battle getting more targets. Don't expect another week like last week, but look for continued good production.
WRJosh Morgan
1 rec, 15 yards
Morgan has been limited to one catch in each of his last three games and no longer is a hot sleeper pick. TE Delanie Walker gets more looks in the passing game than Morgan does, so cut bait on Morgan now.
TEVernon Davis
2 rec, 20 yards
Davis has only two receptions in the last three games and is now more of a blocking back than a receiving threat. He's being cut in many fantasy leagues and shouldn't be a starting option this week as the Niners will run more than they pass against the Patriots at home.
KJoe Nedney
3 PATs, 1 FG
With 38 points in four games, Nedney is holding his own as a fantasy option each week.
Defense
3 sacks, 1 INT, 1 Fumble
With 11 takeaways, a TD and eight sacks in four games, the Niners' defense is becoming a treat for fantasy owners. Look for more takeaways this week as they pressure QB Matt Cassel early and often.
