Sportsman of the Year

I n the last game of the Series, with the Sox hopelessly behind, Yastrzemski came up in the ninth and singled sharply. The crowd in Boston stood and roared its acclaim, probably because, more than anyone else, Carl Yastrzemski still believed in the dream.

In 1967, Carl Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown and was a member of the Boston Red Sox's first pennant-winning team in 21 years. Yastrzemski won one more batting title in 1968. He finished his 23-year career with the Sox, retiring in 1983. Now 57, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.
