Sandy Koufax pitched the Los Angeles Dodgers to the 1965 World Series championship despite debilitating pain in his arthritic left elbow. Koufax retired from professional baseball at age 31 in 1966, having accumulated a 165-87 record with 40 shutouts and a 2.76 ERA. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Now 62, he lives in Vero Beach, Fla.
