Ashton, 12, led Mission Viejo to the U.S. championship in the Little League World Series. He batted .562 with a home run and 10 RBIs in five series games and also went 1-0 as a pitcher for Mission Viejo, which lost 5-4 to International champ Guadalupe of Mexico in the series finale.

Heaney-Grier, (Women|Sport, Fall 1997) 19, broke her own American free-dive record, descending to 165 feet (while holding her breath for 1 minute, 58 seconds) at the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. She eclipsed the mark she set last October by 10 feet. Deborah Andollo of Cuba holds the women's world record of 204'6".

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y.

Gaines, 30, and Piesczynski, 20, won their respective divisions at the U.S. amateur bowling championships. Gaines ran four strikes in frames seven through 10 to overtake Kurt Pilon, 25, of Clinton, Mich., and win the men's title 194-179. Gaines, with 22 perfect games during his 20 years of bowling, has had a high series of 837. Piesczynski rolled three strikes in the 10th frame to beat Lisa Duenow, 26, of Orono, Minn., 168-167 for the women's crown. Earlier in the year she became the first woman to go undefeated in winning the Association of College Unions-International all-events bowling title.

Shonda, a recent graduate of Collinwood High, led the Lady Railroaders to the state Division I girls' track and field title by winning two individual titles—in the 100 meters and the 200—and running the third leg on the state-record-setting 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams. She will compete this school year for Purdue.

Mulcahy, 84, the oldest member of the Gorham Country Club, playing with a 17 handicap, shot an 18-under-par 195 over 54 holes to beat Eric Christensen, 50, by one stroke and win the club's President's Cup championship. Mulcahy has shot his age or better 46 times since turning 80.
