HOUSTON

Marline, 15, won the overall title in the junior girls competition at the U.S. gymnastics championships. Her total of 71.062 placed her .338 of a point ahead of runner-up Sierra Sapunar, 15, of Sebastopol, Calif. Marline also came in first in the vault and the floor exercises.

KERNERSVILLE, N.C.

Payne, a senior at Catawba College, set an NCAA Division II football record for consecutive successful field goal attempts with a 46-yard kick in a season-opening, 48-0 defeat of Tusculum College. The boot that broke the old mark of 14 hit the crossbar and bounced over.

IRVINE, CALIF

Aaron, 14, broke an age-group record in the 200-meter backstroke for the third time, with a time of 2:05.42 in the 13-14 division at the national junior outdoor swimming championships. Earlier he had set marks in the 9-10 division 100 backstroke and in the 11-12 division 200 backstroke.

RICHARDSON, TEXAS

Amanda, 17, had a 13-0 pitching record and an
0.25 ERA for her American Softball Association team, the Texas Sox. Last spring, as a junior at Berkner High, she was named a state co-player of the year and MVP of Richardson district. She had a 15-1 record as a pitcher, batted .500 and slugged .936.

GAITHERSBURG, MD.

Sanjee, 17, who plays sweeper for the Bullis School soccer team, which is ranked No. 5 nationally, had led the Bulldogs to a 8-0 record through last Friday. Bullis had allowed only four goals. Sanjee has been the captain of the Maryland Olympic Development team for the last four years.

  Barry Weinperl
EASTON, PA.

Weinperl, 53, broke seven national masters records en route to winning the age 50-and-over division of the National Archery Association outdoor championships, scoring 2,524 out of a possible 2,880 points. Earlier this year he won the national indoor masters title.
