Lyn St. James has achieved a series of firsts--she was the first solo woman driver to win a pro road race, the first woman to exceed 200 mph on an oval track and the first woman to compete full time on the Indy circuit. She was the rookie of the year at the 1992 Indianapolis 500 and has amassed more than 30 speed records. A former president of the Women's Sports Foundation, the 50-year-old St. James is also the author of a car maintenance manual for women and the founder of a coeducational racing school. She believes women must first learn to play by existing rules. "After you've done that, then you can think about changing the rules," she says.
