Mike Tyson has been melting down before our eyes for years.
There have been unexplained traffic accidents, senseless
street brawls, teary interviews and, of course, a rape
conviction. Still, none of those incidents quite prepared
us for the raw savagery
Tyson exhibited in his June 28 fight with heavyweight
champion Evander Holyfield in Las
Vegas.
During a clinch in the third round, a frustrated Tyson, who
had discarded his mouth guard moments before, stretched
himself up and chomped down on Holyfield's right ear. As
Holyfield whirled about the ring like a wounded Tasmanian
devil, Tyson spat
about an inch of ear to the mat. Referee Mills Lane, unaware of
the severity of the bite, deducted two points from Tyson
and allowed the fight to resume. Seconds later, Tyson bit
Holyfield on the
left ear. This time Lane swiftly stopped the fight,
disqualifying Tyson and raising Holyfield's hand in
victory.
