When the World Cup came stateside in 1994 the U.S. showed
it could get passionate about soccer. Venues like Chicago's
Soldier Field—packed for this 1993 Cup qualifying
match between the U.S. and Germany—consistently sold
out. The U.S. was bumped out of
Cup competition by eventual champ Brazil in the second
round.
