FAME: There will be no additions to the World Golf Hall of Fame this year. Lloyd Mangrum and Greg Norman came the closest to being elected. FLUFF COWAN: "I took this job [as Tiger Woods's caddie] to witness history." We hear the pay isn't too bad, either. LARRY NELSON: At 100th in the World Ranking, he's the only Senior tour player among the top 100. DAVIS LOVE: "We felt like 10 years was too long a time." Love, a member of the PGA Tour policy board, on its decision to reduce the exemption given the winner of a major from 10 years to five, starting this season. Love won his first major last season. JACK NICKLAUS: Jack's not back. The USGA won't give him an exemption to the U.S. Open this year, which will end his streak of playing in majors at 145. STREAKS: Only two players have made five birdies in a row to win a PGA Tour event: Woods, and that guy who won't be playing in the Open this year. NO VACANCY: Want a hotel room for the '99 Ryder Cup in Boston? Good luck. The PGA has reserved almost half the available lodging for that week.
