McGwire and Sosa power their way into history
The number had fascinated the country for decades, the ultimate accomplishment in the most American of sports. In 1998, two men not only surpassed Roger Maris's 1961 home-run total, they obliterated it. Mark McGwire raised the bar to an unfathomable 70, with Sammy Sosa right behind at 66. The way in which both men graciously and humbly chased the record helped finally heal the rift that opened between fans and the game as a result of the 1994 strike. This year, baseball was the national pastime again.
