A first! French fight off invasion, win World Cup
Host France won the biggest event in sports by shutting out favored Brazil, 3-0, handing the defending and four-time champions their most lopsided defeat in 80 World Cup matches. Brazilian superstar Ronaldo was hampered by a mysterious ailment that caused convulsions hours before the final, leaving his availabilty in doubt until game time. But even Ronaldo at 100% may not have been enough to offset the play of Zinedine Zidane, who scored France's first two goals off corner kicks.
