World tunes out moribund Nagano Games
The Winter Games have always been a tough sell, but things were worse than ever this time around. With the competition half a world away in Nagano, Japan, the Games drew the lowest U.S. ratings in 30 years. Canadian snowboarder Ross Rebagliati tested positive for marijuana, was stripped of his gold medal and then had it reinstated because marijuana wasn't on the official banned-substance list. Alpine skiing events were delayed for days by rain and fog. Figure-skating judges made more than their usual share of questionable decisions. But the greatest disgrace fell on members of the U.S. men's hockey team, who gave an ignominious performance on the ice, trashed three Olympic Village apartments, then refused to own up to the vandalism.
