Surely 60 homers ain't what it used to be. But juiced balls, andro, Coors Field
and the Cubs pitching staff aside, finishing 1-2 in the home run race for a
second straight season surely is. Mark McGwire (65) and Sammy Sosa (63) became
the first two players ever to break 60 in consecutive seasons. The most
convincing testament to their abilities is not the numbers they put up, but the
fact that they remain head and shoulders above every other power hitter in the
world. Widely credited in 1998 -- when McGwire shattered Roger Maris' record 61
in '61 with an astonishing 70 -- with saving baseball from the sins of its
recent past, Mac and Sammy weren't much more than a sideshow in '99. Due in
large part to their previous exploits, they didn't have to
be.
