Jean Van de Velde had every right to consider the British Open championship in the bag as he stood on the 18th tee at Carnoustie. But in one of the most bizarre holes of championship golf ever played, the Frenchman lost a three-stroke lead on the way to losing the title to Peter Lawrie in a playoff. Van de Velde started the last round with a five-stroke cushion before losing his lead to Australian Craig Parry. However, he rebuilt his lead to three-shots and reached the final hole needing only a double bogey to win. Seven shots later Van de Velde barely sank a testing five-foot putt to force a three-way play-off with Justin Leonard and Paul Lawrie.
