On June 16, American Maurice Greene quietly broke one of track and field's most heralded records. Two months later, on August 26, American Michael Johnson broke the longest-standing men's record on the biggest athletics stage of the year. Originally, Greene, 24, was not going to run in the 100-meters at the invitational race in Athens, Greece, but he changed his mind after seeing the strong field. "I expected it," Greene said after breaking the 100-meter record with a time of 9.79 seconds. Greene, a native of Kansas City, Kan., failed to qualify for the Atlanta Olympics, where Canada's Donovan Bailey set the previous mark of 9.84 seconds. But Johnson was a star at the Atlanta Olympics, setting the 200-meter world record. He added the 400-meter record to his collection at the World Championships in Seville, Spain this year. The 31-year-old Texan crossed the finish line almost 10 meters ahead of the competition with his eyes on the scoreboard -- it read 43.18 seconds.
