Following the debacle that was the drug and scandal plagued 1998 Tour de France, Lance Armstrong provided a refreshing and spirited return to respectability for the sport, claiming cycling's premier crown after successfully battling cancer. Armstrong started the Tour on the right foot, winning the prologue, then went on to win three more stages to solidify his position at the top of the table. Although whispers of drugs trailed Armstrong's victorious ride down the Champs-Elysees, all tests proved them to be negative.
