It wouldn't be a normal Formula One season without controversy -- but 1999 was controversial even by F1 standards. Ferrari's Eddie Irvine took the F1 lead in October when he won the Malaysian Grand Prix. After the race, Ferrari was disqualified for a minor technical infraction, handing Mika Hakkinen the World Driving Championship. Or so it seemed. One week later, Irvine was reinstated as the F1 points leader after the sport's ruling body upheld an appeal filed by Ferrari. As it turned out, it didn't matter. Hakkinen responded by driving a brilliant race at the season finale in Japan to win the title over Irvine by a mere two points (76-74).
