| HIGHS AND LOWS DURING THE BOBBLEHEAD
CRAZE |
 | On May 9, 1999, the San Francisco Giants trigger the resurgence in the
craze for these nodding collectibles by distributing 35,000 Willie Mays
figurines at a game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
|
| The Giants may have ignited the craze, but the Twins were the first team
to capitalize on it. During the 2000 season, Minnesota's average attendance was
14,000 per home game. However, more than 20,000 fans flocked to the Metrodome
for each of the club's four (Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Kent Hrbek and Kirby
Puckett) bobblehead giveaway
games.
|
 | At least 35 fans use counterfeit tickets to claim Wally Szczerbiak
bobbleheads at a Timberwolves game on December 28, 2000. The team responds by
tightening security for its final two bobblehead giveaways of the
season.
|
 | Adults reportedly behave like children during Allen Iverson Bobblehead
Night on February 16, 2001. Only kids 15 and under were to receive the doll at
the Clippers-Sixers matchup at the First Union Center, causing some conniving
adults to "rent" children for the night, buying the youngsters
tickets, provided they hand over the Iverson figurines to the
elders.
|
| When the Spurs give away David Robinson bobbleheads at a game against the
lowly Clippers on March 12, 2001, almost 22,000 fans jam the Alamodome, nearly
doubling the number of people who witnessed the Clippers' last visit to San
Antonio.
|
| Struggling Indians first baseman Jim Thome is not in the starting lineup
against the Tigers on the Bobblehead Day held in his honor on April 21, 2001.
But fate intervenes and the slugger wins the game with a pinch-hit two-run homer
in the bottom of the 11th
inning.
|
| The Tigers pay tribute to Hall of Fame outfielder Al Kaline on July 4, 2001
with a bobblehead giveaway. The event has its problems early on, though, when
the prototype figurine turns out to look nothing like Kaline. The team asks the
manufacturer to start from scratch on the model and come up with a different
look.
|
| NEUTRAL | The Marlins hold "Human Bobblehead Night" on July 20, 2001.
Fans 18-and-older who shave their heads outside Pro Player Stadium before the
game against the Reds receive four tickets for the next night's game, at which
Cliff Floyd bobbleheads are given
out.
|
 | Floyd homers in the July 21 contest, becoming the fourth player in the
2001 season to go deep on the day he's featured as his team's bobblehead giveaway. The
previous three players to accomplish the feat were Thome, Jason Giambi of the
Oakland A's and Sammy Sosa of the Chicago
Cubs.
|
 | Dave Winfield is to be honored with a special Hall of Fame bobblehead at
the Twins-Mariners game on July 22, 2001. However, the manufacturer is forced to
create a new prototype of the doll after the 6-foot-6 Winfield points out a
"shortcoming" -- his figurine is the same size as the bobblehead made
for fellow Twins inductee Kirby Puckett, who's all of 5-foot-8. The new Winfield
model has an extra added inch of
height.
|
 | The bobblehead craze spreads from athletes to announcers. The Brewers will
hold Bob Uecker Bobblehead Day on July 29, 2001. The Tigers plan to honor
legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell with a doll on September 29,
2001.
|
 | Apparently the downtrodden Devil Rays have no player other than Fred
McGriff deserving of a Bobblehead Day -- he was so honored on June 22, 2001 --
so the club plans to give away a bobblehead of its furry mascot, Raymond, on
August 12,
2001.
|
| The Indians will top all major league clubs for bobblehead giveaways in
2001 with seven: Roberto Alomar, Dave Burba, Bartolo Colon, Travis Fryman, Kenny
Lofton, Jim Thome and Omar Vizquel will all be featured for the Jacobs Field
crowd.
|
 | The Columbus Clippers, the Yankees' Class AAA affiliate, take the prize
for most Bobblehead Days in one season by a professional sports team with 11
giveaway promotions scheduled for 2001. Former Clippers Steve Balboni, Jay
Buhner, Derek Jeter, Don Mattingly, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Dave Righetti,
Mariano Rivera, J.T. Snow and Bernie Williams will be honored as will current
coach Hop
Cassady.
|
| The bobbing collectible reaches legendary status. Retired greats Bill
Mazeroski, Willie McCovey, Tommy Lasorda, Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan have all
been honored with Bobblehead Days over the past two
seasons.
|
 | Coming September 2001, more than 40 universities will release
bobbleheads of their respective mascots, including the Stanford
tree.
|
 | Bobblehead Mania expands into some meaty territory. Beginning in October
2001, a bobblehead of a can of Spam (with legs) will be available for purchase
at the Spam Museum in Austin,
Minn.
