Jeffri Chadiha's Detroit

Must see sports destinations
1. Comerica Park

All those baseball fans enamored with Tiger Stadium have to admit the new digs are something to behold. From the gargantuan stone tigers positioned outside the front gates to the incredible sight lines that make sitting in any seat a treat -- you can see downtown over the right-field fence -- Comerica is the most underrated ballpark to open in the last decade. It hasn't drawn the national accolades heaped on places like Camden Yards or Pac Bell Park, but it is just as spectacular.

2. Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor
3. The monument of Joe Louis' fist in downtown Detroit
4. Oakland Hills Country Club, site of the 2003 Ryder Cup
5. Joe Louis Arena

Must see Non-sports destinations
1. Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn

You can't come to the Motor City and ignore this landmark. You'll see vintage cars and learn about the history of the automobile. If that's not enough, you can always check out Greenfield Village, where you'll discover what life was like when horses and carriages constituted luxury transportation.

2. The Second City theater
3. Chene Park
4. Fox Theatre
5. Hart Plaza

Food and drink
1. Greektown

The area surrounding Comerica Park has taken off in recent years, but Greektown is still the most established neighborhood for social activities. There are several options for restaurants and bars -- and if you want both, Fishbone's on Monroe Street is your spot.

2. Hockeytown Café, Woodward Ave.
3. Harpo's Concert Theatre, Harper Ave.
4. River Rock, Franklin St.
5. Xochimilco, Bagley St.

Don't believe the hype
1. Renaissance Center

This is easily the most mystifying structure in Detroit proper. It's home to several shops, restaurants, offices and a movie theater, but it's got the charm of an operating room and you're likely to get hopelessly lost in the place even with the help of a map. Bottom line: Stay away.

2. Windsor, Ontario. Just across the Detroit River
3. Belle Isle. An island park in the Detroit River
4. People Mover. An elevated computerized rail transit system with stations throughout downtown Detroit
5. The Palace of Auburn Hills

Most memorable sports moments
1. Isiah Thomas scoring a record 25 third-quarter points in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, 1988

The Pistons of that era embodied Detroit's personality -- unassuming, determined, industrious -- and no performance was more awe-inspiring than Thomas', as he heaved point after point on the Lakers despite having a severely sprained ankle. The Pistons eventually lost the series, but that effort convinced the world of one thing: No matter what you thought of the Bad Boys, you couldn't question their heart.

2. Kirk Gibson's home run in Game 6 of World Series, 1984
3. Red Wings win back-to-back Stanley Cups, 1997 and '98
4. Barry Sanders becomes the third man in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, 1997
5. Vinnie Johnson's game-winning and series-deciding shot in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, 1990

Jeffri Chadiha grew up in Ann Arbor, graduated from the University of Michigan and was a reporter for the Ann Arbor News.
