 | The old Orange Bowl

Miami is the most fractious city in the U.S., full of political intrigue and
sports fans who can't decide whether to boost their teams ad nauseum or ignore
them completely. Aside from the Dolphins, Miami's pro teams are mostly
come-latelys which have little purchase on city's heart; and Pro Player
(formerly Joe Robbie) Stadium is an antiseptic can in the middle of nowhere. On
the other hand, the old Orange Bowl, crammed into a neighborhood hard by Little
Havana and the rest of downtown, is home to the beloved University of Miami
Hurricanes. It's rife with history and a wholly gratifying place to see a
big-time college game. Game or no, though, it's still the one place to get first
whiff of Miami's sports
soul.

2. Mark Light Stadium in Coral Gables. Home of the dynastic University of Miami
baseball
team.
3. Bobby Maduro Stadium. The one-time spring home of the Baltimore Orioles and
keeper of the city's Cuban baseball
spirit.
4. American Airlines
Arena
5. Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. One of the finest tennis venues on the
planet.

 | MacArthur Causeway

Park the car, watch
the cruise ships chug out to sea and take in the jet skiers. There's simply no
better place to get a concentrated dose of what makes Miami
magical.

4. Venetian

 | News Cafe

Despite being a huge tourist haunt, News Cafe, in both Miami Beach and
Coconut Grove, still retains an incredible atmosphere -- especially if you avoid
the need to see-and-be-seen and sit inside. Great jazz, outstanding food, quick
service and the best newsstand in town make this a great place to go with
someone or (just as satisfying) alone.

2. The Gourmet Diner, North Miami
Beach
3. Norman's, Coral
Gables
4. Club Deuce, Miami Beach. The best dive in
town.
5. La Sandwicherie, Miami Beach. The best sandwiches, served outside 'til 4
a.m.

 | Pro Player Stadium

Home of the Dolphins and Marlins, it's a completely
soulless venue stuck up in the no-man's land between Broward and Dade Counties.
It may be perfectly functional and full of amenities, but it's about as cozy as
a
warehouse.

 | Marlins win the 1997 World
Series

There are surely more beloved moments, but none are more emblematic of the Jekyll-Hyde role sports plays in
this city and the ambivalent attitude of the fans. Soon after, of course,
then-owner Wayne Huizenga gutted the franchise by selling off the team's best
players.

2. Miami Dolphins' perfect season,
1972
3. University of Miami's first national championship, 1984
4. Florida Panthers' run to the Stanley Cup finals, 1996
5. Any UM-Florida State football game at the Orange Bowl
