 | A Big Five game at the Palestra

It's an old-fashioned arena on the
University of Pennsylvania campus that just won't go away because no one in
Philly wants it to. The tradition, the proximity of fan to court, the old-time
ambience of the place and the intensity of the intracity rivalries make a
matchup involving any combination of Penn, St. Joseph's, Villanova, LaSalle and
Temple something special.

 | Independence Hall

OK, it's a bit predictable. And, as we all know, there's a
crack in the Liberty Bell. But this place still brings out the goose bumps.
People, this is where it all started. Instead of staying home and renting The
Patriot, bring the kids to the Hall.

5. Elfreth's Alley. The oldest continuously inhabited street in
America.

 | Susanna Foo's, Walnut St.

Its oh-so-tony neighbor, Le Bec Fin, is much better
known, but this Asian fusion revelation won't break your bank (as the French
joint will) and the food is impossibly good.

2. The Irish Pub, Walnut St. Draws a sports
crowd.
3. Marina's, Havertown. OK, it's about a half-mile outside the city line, but
the Eagles hang out there.
4. Serrano Tin Angel, South 2nd St. Great restaurant downstairs, great live
music upstairs.
5. Termini Bakery, South Philly. Legendary cannoli.

 | Any parade involving the Mummers

Take the banjos, the Mummers' strut and the
tired version of Oh, Those Golden Slippers and march them all straight
into the Schuylkill. And don't bother marching to Pat's or Geno's cheesesteaks,
either. There are 10 places in the city where this Philly delicacy is just as
good, and without
Cheez Whiz.

 | The collapse of the 1964 Phillies

Almost 40 years later, it remains this
city's frame of reference for failure. It is Philly's Pearl Harbor. There are
fans who can still give you chapter and verse on how Gene Mauch blew it by
overusing ace pitchers Jim Bunning and Chris Short.

Jack McCallum was born just south of Philadelphia and now lives just north of
it. He saw his first major league baseball game at Connie Mack Stadium, saw his
first pro football game at Franklin Field (the 1960 Eagles-Packers
championship), his first pro basketball game at Convention Hall and worked for
the Philadelphia Bulletin before coming to Sports Illustrated. The
fact that the baseball stadium, the basketball arena and the newspaper don't
exist anymore cannot be pinned on Jack.
