Pop Culture Q&A

First album you bought?
Unplugged, Nirvana. My sister and I put our money together and walked down to the record store to buy it because I didn't think our parents were going to let us buy it. My friend had it and I listened to it when we took a trip up to Tahoe and I heard it for the first time and it was like nothing I had ever heard before. My group of friends in high school were more into rap and hip hop and I had never heard anything like Nirvana before and that's when I really started to get into rock and roll.

First concert you attended?
My friend Ashley and I went to see Boyz II Men when we were in the seventh grade. We went to see them somewhere in San Jose. And I remember being so excited but I don't even remember what they sang now. It was one of those shows where the girls were all screaming to the slow songs. I do remember everyone getting excited when they sang End of the Road.

Rock star that you know?
I know Brandy (Brandon Boyd) and Mikey (Mike Einziger) from Incubus. They actually surf Malibu and I surf there and we have mutual friends and we met about four years ago. I've seen them perform live a couple of times. They had a special secret little concert in Santa Monica at the Sony sound stage and that was really cool because it was an intimate small group of people. It was really fun.

Rock star you want to know?
I would have loved to have met Jimi Hendrix. I'm not sure if I would want to meet any of them today. They kind of scare me. I think if I had a rock star friend, I would get into a lot of trouble. Jimi was just such an original. He was so original and he had this insane style. There is and was no one like him, especially at the time. He just blew onto the scene and I think he scared all the other rock stars around him because he was the new sound. He's just original, there's no one like him. There are a lot of imitators but there's no one like him.

Gnarls Barkley is...
I don't know a lot about him.

Britney Spears is...
In need of some privacy.

K-Fed is...
Oh jeez! He's dreaming that he'll be the next Eminem.

When I sing karaoke...
I remember that I can't sing and then I shut the hell up. I really can't sing. It's funny because my friend actually had a karaoke machine at her New Year's party but you know, it doesn't matter how many glasses of wine I've had, I'm not getting up there. I have a terrible voice. I'm reminded of that whenever I do get up there. If I do have to sing I'll usually pick an '80s song, like something from The Breakfast Club soundtrack.

Song that reminds you of your first kiss?
It's probably a song that I'd want to forget. I think I was listening to a lot of Def Leppard and Guns N' Roses so it was probably one of their songs.

Song that makes you cry?
One song that really makes me cry is Last Kiss by Pearl Jam. It's really sad. I actually think it's a remake of a song but he's talking about driving with his girlfriend and they get into a car accident and she dies so it's their last kiss. I mean it's a really sad song. So I was crying when I first heard and thought I don't need to listen to this anymore but it was a good song. I like Pearl Jam. I remember exactly where I was when I heard it the first time. I was driving on the 10 Freeway in LA and I was like, "Oh, this is cool; a new song. I like Pearl Jam." And then I was listening to the words and it was so heartbreaking.

What you wanted to be at age 10?
I wanted to be a sports broadcaster. KSBW 8 was and still is the television station in Santa Cruz and at the Santa Cruz County Fair they set up a booth where you could actually read the teleprompter and pretend you're the news anchor. So my parents still have this tape of me doing the news when I was 10 years old. I'm sitting there with braces and the whole thing, reading the teleprompter and thinking that I'm the coolest thing ever. We actually pulled that tape out six months ago and watched it.

Athlete that you want to know?
Joe Calzaghe. He's a boxer from the UK. It's really weird that I'm into boxing but I am. My dad's really into it and I've actually been watching a lot of boxing lately. It's really entertaining. Calzaghe is crazy. He's like the white crazy guy. He's undefeated in his professional career and it's funny because he's never had his nose broken. He had a big nose and you would think a boxer with a nose like his would break it, but he hasn't it. Not only that, but he's a white guy and you don't have a lot of strong white guys in boxing. He's fun to watch. He has a lot of energy. It looks like he never gets tired.

I'll spend Valentine's Day...
At the SI Swimsuit Party, but if I wasn't I would hope that I would be doing something very romantic and stuffing my face with chocolate.

What attracts you to a man?
Chemistry. That attraction has to be there. When I met my husband on a plane, and everyone laughs when I say this, the first thing I noticed that I thought was attractive was his mohawk. Maybe it's just a weird thing for me but I have always had this thing for mohawks and I don't want to say that I never had one because it sounds weird, but I never dated a guy with a mohawk but I always wanted to. That was so funny to me because I was really attracted to this guy because of the mohawk. It was like a red flag waving. It's a funny story how I met my husband. He was sitting there and I was taking my mom on a job and we were sitting in business class and he was on the aisle and my mom sat across from the aisle and I was on the window and I knew that my mom and him were going to start talking and I was kind of pissed off at my mom because she's very trusting and she'll talk to anyone and give them my address and phone number and she's kind clueless in that sort of way, God bless her heart. So I told my mom not to talk to strangers and tell them that I wasn't a model and I was in my full hat and sweatshirt and sure enough she opened that door and I was mad at her at first but she was right.
