The biggest names in sports gathered in New York's Madison Square Garden on Dec. 2, 1999, for Sports Illustrated's 20th Century Sports Awards. The festivities began with a list of 42 nominees in seven categories, with one winner selected from each group.
The first award of the night, for the century's greatest football player, went to Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown. The last, for the SI Sportsman of the Century, went to the great Muhammad Ali.
