Then: Despite flashes of power, posted an underwhelming .220 career batting average in 11 seasons with the Giants, Brewers, Tigers, Red Sox and Padres, striking out an AL-record 186 times in 1987.   Now: Spent the five years immediately following his retirement from the majors in 1996 as a full-time drag racer; now is a minor league hitting coach with the Class A Lake Elsinore (Calif.) Storm.
