Last week athletes returned to the field for the first time since the tragic events of Sept. 11, determined to help a sad and shaken nation move forward. Fans expressed their pride and appreciation by displaying the American flag any way they could think of. Painted on faces, pinned to lapels, flying high overhead, the countless representations of Old Glory turned stadiums from New York to Seattle into symbols of red, white and blue unity.
