The Rams won the toss and moved right-to-left across the TV screen. They came out after a big return from Yo Murphy, opening up with an empty backfield. Only one of the plays on the opening drive was a run. Otherwise, quarterback Kurt Warner came out firing, completing an 18-yarder to Torry Holt. The drive stalled, though, after a pass interference penalty on Ernie Conwell put the Rams in a second-and-18 from their own 49.

The Patriots, pinned at their own 3, came out with a slant across the middle from quarterback Tom Brady to Troy Brown that gained 20 yards. But the drive stalled near midfield when, on a third-and-8, Brady was chased out of bounds at the Patriots' 48. The punt flew into the end zone.

The Patriots are hitting hard early, punishing the Rams' receivers on short routes. The Pats put some pressure on Warner on a third-and-4, but Warner stepped up and found Isaac Bruce for an 11-yard gain. Warner came up with a bloody lip later in the drive, and the Rams stopped them at the 32, setting up the 50-yard field goal. Warner completed 6 of 7 passes on the drive.

Key play: A 14-yard play-action pass from Warner to Faulk on first-and-10 from the Rams' 47.

Brady was 3-for-3 on the first Pats drive, but he had his first pass of this drive deflected at the line and New England went three-and-out. Antowain Smith picked up five yards on a hard run, but Brady failed to hook up with Kevin Faulk on third down and the Pats were forced to punt.

The Rams started this drive in the first quarter by going to their strength -- or one of their strengths. Running back Marshall Faulk ran the ball on the first three plays of the drive (a total of 15 yards). But after that, the Rams forgot about him. After a break at the end of the first quarter, the Patriots continued to smack the Rams' receivers, hitting Az-Zahir Hakim over the middle on a second-down incompletion, while the New England front continued to hassle Warner. Still, on third-and-15 from the St. Louis 32, Warner had plenty of time and connected with Hakim all the way down to the New England 39. The drive stalled, though, when Jeff Wilkins hooked a 52-yard field goal try that would have been short anyway.

The Patriots, trying to control the tempo of the game (and keep their defense off the field) by using Antowain Smith's running, hurt themselves with a big holding penalty that dropped them back into their own territory. They continued to use Smith even on first-and-20. Brady was forced to throw the ball away on a third-and-17 from the New England 47.

The Patriots' Ty Law scored the game's first touchdown. AP
Again, the Rams tried to control the ball using Faulk, but on a first-and-10 (after Faulk picked up 20 yards on the two previous runs), Warner dropped back from the St. Louis 39 and looked for Isaac Bruce on the right side. An untouched Mike Vrabel came in from the left side of the defensive line and smacked Warner in the head as he was releasing the ball. The ball floated to Ty Law, who took the pass back untouched down the left sideline for a New England touchdown.

Key play: This was a no-brainer with Law's 47-yard interception return.

The Rams, down in a game they were favored in by more than a touchdown, came out again with Faulk. Tedy Bruschi slammed Faulk for no gain on a second-and-1 and Warner's pass on third down was nearly intercepted. The Rams, clearly not in synch offensively, had to punt.

The Patriots couldn't have planned things better at this point. Antowain Smith is the workhorse, Brady has been solid, if not particularly awe-inspiring (4-for-7, 35 yards) and the big interception by Ty Law has them in the lead. The Pats are controlling the clock with Smith (10 carries, 41 yards), keeping the Rams' offense off the field. But on a third-and-8 from the New England 39, the Rams' Leonard Little stunted to the inside and slammed Brady for a sack as the two-minute warning sounded. The Rams will get one more chance before halftime. Score or not, the Rams are where few figured they'd be.

The Rams were only behind at the half twice this season, so already there may be a sense of panic setting in. They've tried, at times, to open things up in the first half, but the hard-hitting Patriots have thrown them off. That was evident on a first-and-25 when the Rams' Ricky Proehl was hit by Antwan Harris and coughed up the ball, giving the Patriots another scoring chance before halftime.

Patten's acrobatic catch gave the Pats their second touchdown. AP
Running the two-minute drill, the Patriots got a big first-down screen to Troy Brown, which took them from the St. Louis 40 to the 24 and put them in position to take a bigger lead into the half. They did that when Brady found David Patten in the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Patten headed toward the right sideline on an out-pattern, then curled back inside and made a leaping catch to beat Rams cornerback Dexter McCleon for the score. It is the first time the Rams have trailed by more than eight points all season.

Key play: On third-and-2, Kevin Faulk took a pitch around the left end and ran for eight yards and a first down that set up the scoring pass.

This is how the Rams' first half has gone: Marshall Faulk, trying to get something going in the waning seconds of the half, stepped out of bounds at the St. Louis 6, forcing Warner to take a knee to end the first half.
