Statistically, the Rams were better than the Patriots in just about every category in the first half, outgaining them 184 yards to 117, including 131 passing yards to 60. But statistics, as they say, are for losers, and the Patriots look like anything but as they enter the second half with an 11-point lead. An unsung hero: Patriots punter Ken Walter, who had four punts for an average of 49.8 yards. The Patriots started the second half by running Antowain Smith again, but sputtered when they took a shot downfield (incomplete) and Grant Wistrom caught J.R. Redmond in the backfield for a 4-yard loss. The Pats had to punt.

No team ever has trailed by 11 points at the half of a Super Bowl and come back to win. Still, the feeling is if anyone can, the Rams can. Their offense did not run as planned in the first half, thanks largely to the Patriots' hard-hitting secondary and a front that has gotten to Kurt Warner. The Rams also are suffering from an injury to tackle Rod Jones, who will not play in the second half because of a recurring groin injury. Still, without the two big turnovers in the first half, this would be a whole different ballgame. The Rams came out firing in the second half, overcoming a holding penalty deep in their own territory and moving across midfield, all through the passing game. The Patriots continued to pound, though. Lawyer Milloy rolled Isaac Bruce after a reception, Warner was sacked by tackle Richard Seymour and the Patriots blitzed the Rams on third down, with linebacker Roman Phifer deflecting Warner's pass while giving the QB another shot. Another rough go for the Rams. And things aren't looking any better for them.

The Patriots started to assert themselves behind Antowain Smith and a little trickery. Smith gained 17 yards on a first-down run and then handed to wideout David Patten on an end-around that gained 21 yards. But the Rams' defense buckled down, with Dre' Bly knocking down a third-down pass meant for Patten to end the drive. A good defensive stand for the Rams, who watched as Ken Walter's punt flew into the end zone.

The Patriots have used all sorts of formations and seem to have confused the Rams. The Pats opened the drive with five defensive backs. The Rams responded with a Marshall Faulk run for 12 yards up the middle. Still, the Rams were forced to take their second timeout of the half -- in only their second possession of the half. Not a big deal for the quick-strike Rams, but it showed the Patriots have them out of sync. Right before the Rams' timeout, Warner may have hurt the thumb on his throwing hand, an injury that has nagged him all season. When Warner tries to throw to Torry Holt a couple plays later, Holt falls and Otis Smith intercepts for the Patriots. If the Rams haven't panicked yet, it's about time now.

Vinatieri's 37-yard field goal gave the Pats a two-TD lead.
AP |
The Patriots again are pulling out all the stops. They tried a halfback pass with Kevin Faulk that the Rams sniffed out and, on the next play, snapped the ball directly to Faulk. It got them enough yardage that Adam Vinatieri was able to punch through a 37-yard field goal, putting the Pats up by two touchdowns. The Rams will take over with just over a minute left in the third quarter. And a long, long way to go.
Key play: Brady hit Troy Brown with an 11-yard pass on first down.

Warner scrambles into the end zone from two yards out.
AP |
Oh, the flags! A huge TD return for a touchdown by the Patriots' Tebucky Jones was negated because linebacker Willie McGinest mugged Marshall Faulk on a critical fourth-and-goal from the New England 3. Warner couldn't find anyone open and was forced to scramble toward the goal line, where Roman Phifer poked the ball out and Jones took it the other way. But Faulk was grabbed coming off the line, giving the Rams a first down at about the New England 2. Warner took it in on a draw, standing up, two plays later for the Rams' first touchdown of the night. Warner scrambled a lot on the drive going 6-for-8 for 73 yards.
Key play: A 22-yard pass from Warner to Faulk on a slant route that got the ball inside the St. Louis 9.

On a drive the Patriots badly needed, New England went three-and-out -- and, suddenly, Patriots' fans have to be thinking "How are we gonna blow this one?" On third down, Leonard Little pressured New England quarterback Tom Brady around the backside, causing him to misfire his pass to Jermaine Wiggins. The Patriots had to punt and the Rams took over deep in their own territory.

Facing 93 yards to tie the score, the Rams took over with 9:44 left in the game. They moved the ball across midfield, but when it counted … nothing. Warner got a lot of time to throw, but he's not finding anyone downfield against the multiple defensive backs. Willie McGinest absolutely creamed him on an incompletion, then sacked him later for a huge 16-yard loss. The Rams, with no timeouts left, were forced to punt with less than four minutes in the game.

The Pats have been no offensive juggernaut, either. Again, they went three-and-out when a first down probably would have sealed the game. Instead, the Patriots played it safely, pitching once to Antowain Smith, running him once and completing a short, safe pass over the middle to him. The two-minute warning came as Walter punted to the Rams, who seemingly will have one more chance to tie the score -- with 1:51 left.

Proehl dives between Lawyer Milloy and Terrance Shaw.

This is why the Rams are the Rams. Starting on their own 45, it took Warner three plays -- three plays! -- to get the Rams into the end zone. The last was a beautiful pass to a wide-open Ricky Proehl along the left sideline, who cut in at about the New England 9 for the score. The extra point was good, tying the score with 1:30 left.
Key play: On the first play of the drive, Az-Zahir Hakim took a pass, headed to the right sideline, avoided a tackler and tiptoed down the sideline for an 18-yard gain.

Vinatieri rejoices following his game-winning field goal.
AP |
Yeah, maybe they should have held the ball. With that offense, with no timeouts, maybe they should have just kept the darn ball. But the Patriots, defying the odds all season long, pushed it down the Rams' throat in the final seconds of the game, capping the drive -- and winning the Super Bowl -- with a 48-yard field goal from Adam Vinatieri as time expired. Tom Brady went 5-for-8 for 53 yards on the last drive -- and that included two spikes to stop the clock -- almost flawlessly moving the Pats into Vinatieri's range. Brady was superb and completely in control, and his receivers fought their way to the sidelines to keep the clock from winding down. Vinatieri, who beat Oakland with two clutch field goals in the snow in the divisional round of the playoffs, capped what may be called the best Super Bowl ever by splitting the uprights easily.
Key play: Brady completed his longest pass of the day, connecting for 23 yards to Troy Brown, to get the Pats into Vinatieri's range.
