DEREK WATSON
Position: HB
Class: Sr
School: S. Carolina St.
Conference: MEAC
Ht., Wt.: 6'0, 223
40 Time: 4.66
Grade: 3.36

BIO: Oft-troubled running back who totaled 54 carries for 296 yards and three scores as a senior, along with six receptions for 79 yards and one more touchdown. Suspended during the middle of the season after being arrested for a traffic violation on September 22. Previously played at South Carolina where he totaled 139-618-5 on the ground and 27-218-2 as a pass catcher during the 2001 season. Sophomore totals were 187-1,066-11 as a ball carrier, 21-181-2 as a pass catcher with an average of nearly 30 yards on 13 kick returns. Off the field incidents include traffic charges, possession of marijuana and punching a woman in the face.

POSITIVES: Talented ball handler who must quickly get his priorities in order. Runs with forward lean, quick through the hole and displays wiggle in the open field. Has a slashing style and slides off defenders yet also displays a good burst through the hole. Solid receiver with soft hands and the ability to adjust to the errant throw. Offers a nice sense of timing in all aspects of his game.

NEGATIVES: Does not run to his size or pick up much yardage off initial contact. Lacks the speed to get outside around the corner.

ANALYSIS: Said all the right things during Combine interviews but in Watson's case, actions speak louder than words and to this point, a lot of wasted talent.

PROJECTION: Late Seventh Round
