BIO: Three-year starter who totaled 41/2/6 as a senior. Hampered by a knee injury throughout the 2002 season and saw action in seven games. Had a brilliant sophomore campaign and totaled 56/7/17.
POSITIVES: One-time promising cornerback whose play has taken a fall the past two seasons. Fluid backpedaling off the line, flips his hips and loses nothing in transition. Stays with receivers out from their breaks, keeps the action in front of him and displays a nice burst of closing speed. Good awareness in zone, reads the quarterback and remains focused.
NEGATIVES: Plays back on his heels, slow to locate the pass and falls asleep. Not aggressive or always willing mix it up. Looked like he is still feeling the effects from the injury suffered in ‘02.
ANALYSIS: Displaying both production and football sense in the past, Gilford looked like an outstanding future prospect as a sophomore but was slowed to return to form last season. Possibly an inexpensive dime back at the next level.
