Position:WR Class: Sr School:
Penn St. Conference:
Big Ten Ht., Wt.: 5'10½, 202 40 Time: 4.62 Grade: 3.25
BIO: Two-year starter who led the team in receiving with 32/445/4. Played in only 10 of 12 games due to a suspension in late October when he was charged with driving under the influence. Junior totals were 34/549/3 after a breakout season of sorts as a sophomore when he started four games and finished with 27/504/3, averaging 18.7 yards per catch. Brother Larry Johnson was a record setting running back at Penn State last year and father Larry Johnson, Sr. is the team's defensive line coach.
POSITIVES: Up-and-down receiver who never really took his game to the next level after a promising sophomore campaign. Quick footed running patterns, stays low on exit and naturally comes back to the ball, catching the pass from his frame. Displays focus and concentration, adjusts or tracks the ball and plucks the pass from the air. Good sense of timing and anticipation. Displayed big play abilities early in his career, coming up with the home run reception down the field.
NEGATIVES: Lacks the quick release off the line as well as playing strength. Has difficulty cleanly releasing off the snap when jammed by larger defensive backs and cannot make the tough catch with opponents draped on him.
ANALYSIS: If nothing else, Johnson has been consistent though not outstanding through college. If he focuses and makes football a priority he should easily fit in as a fourth receiver at the next level.
