BIO: Transfer from Florida who's been a top defender on the Division 1-AA level. All-conference selection as a senior after leading the team with 116/14/5 tackles. All-American as a junior after totaling 160/18/7.5. Did not play football in 2001. Used at both inside and outside linebacker in the McNeese State scheme.
POSITIVES: Under-sized, yet productive linebacker, best defending the run. Breaks down well, explosive moving up the field and flies around the football. Scrapes laterally, slips blocks and redirects to the action, squaring into ball carriers and wrapping up. Stacks well against the run and hard hitting. Improved his discipline and decision making as a senior.
NEGATIVES: Must improve his hand technique and protect himself better as he gets caught up in the trash moving laterally. Slow shedding blocks once engaged at the point. Lacks the great speed to the flanks and does not get great depth on his drops. Indecisive when the ball is in the air and slow to react. Not strong at the point and has tackles broken.
ANALYSIS: A competitive prospect that handles coaching well, Royal has limited upside based on only average poor size-speed numbers. Better off in a three-four system where he is allowed to roam freely to the action and won't get caught up with blocks.
