BIO: Three-year starter at right guard, awarded All-Conference honors multiple times.
POSITIVES: Large, powerful lineman who controls opponents once engaged at the point of attack. Quickly gets into blocks, moves opponents off the line or engulfs defenders and removes them from the play. Displays skill sliding laterally and anchors at the point in pass protection. Relatively good athlete with solid movement skills. Displays great jolt and push at the initial point of contact.
NEGATIVES: Looks overweight, heavy-legged and bends at the waist, which reduces his agility. Not a natural knee bender and a narrow-based blocker who does a lot of leaning on opponents. Wears down as the game proceeds. Suffered a minor leg fracture in the postseason.
ANALYSIS: A productive blocker on the collegiate level, Mayes offers solid upside for the NFL. Must improve his conditioning and consistently play with solid fundamentals, yet if he pays the price, has starting potential down the road.
