2006 NFL Draft Draft Tracker Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5 Round 6 Round 7 Players Positions Schools Conferences

 Eric Smith Grade: 3.29
 Position: S
 Class: Sr
 School: Michigan State
 Conference: Big Ten
 Ht., Wt.: 6-1, 209
 40 Time: 4.68
  Selected by: New York Jets
  Round 3, pick 33 (97 overall)

BIO: Four-year starter awarded All-Conference honors as a senior, leading the team with 101 tackles. Posted career-best numbers of 115 tackles and nine pass defenses as a junior.

POSITIVES: Aggressive safety best in run support. Displays an excellent head for the ball and goes hard until the whistle blows. Disciplined, stays with assignments and keeps the action in front of him. Flashes on the scene, lays his shoulders into ball carriers and goes for the knockout blow.

NEGATIVES: Lacks sideline-to-sideline range and is usually a half-step late getting to the spot. Does more trailing than covering in pass defense. Durability is a concern.

ANALYSIS: A physical defensive back with good instincts, Smith has been productive on the college level. A traditional strong safety who must stay healthy to have any chance of making it at the next level.
