BIO: Former tight end moved to the offensive line as a junior and started 10 games last season.
POSITIVES: Developing blocker with good upside. Effective position blocker makes good use of angles and displays skill sliding to protect the edge. Excellent hand technician who controls opponents once engaged at the point. Plays with a nasty attitude and always looks for someone to hit.
NEGATIVES: Not a natural knee-bender nor a dominant drive-blocker. More of an arm wrestler and has trouble finishing blocks.
ANALYSIS: Coming off a terrific senior campaign, Gates offers potential at guard or tackle. Needs to physically mature and improve his playing strength, yet a versatile backup who could see spot duty as a starter in the NFL.
