BIOGRAPHY: All-Conference and all-America selection as a senior after totaling 38/481/7. Totals in .06 included 26/26/2. Attended USC in 2001 then redshirted. Spent the following year at El Camino College. Did not attend school in .04 or .05.
POSITIVES: Large, athletic playmaker with natural pass-catching skills. Quickly releases off the line, runs better than average routes and comes back to the ball working to make himself an available target. Gets vertical, contorts in midair and snatches the pass with his hands. Nicely uses his frame to protect pass and adjusts well to the errant throw. Makes the reception running laterally or comes away with the catch in the middle of a crowd. Gives effort blocking.
NEGATIVES: Rarely used as an in-line blocker. Does not show functional blocking strength and has difficulty controlling opposing linebackers. Ran poorly at the combine but was struggling with a foot injury.
ANALYSIS: Kapanui is a solid athlete who plays much faster than his 40-time and presents himself as a top-notch pass-catcher. He must improve his blocking and continue to build off his terrific senior campaign. Kapanui offers a good amount of upside and could have a home at the next level as a number two tight end.
