DETROIT, Michigan (Ticker) -- After winning for only the second time in nine weeks, the Buffalo Destroyers will look to keep their playoff hopes alive when they visit the Detroit Fury on Thursday night. Buffalo's defense stopped a two-point conversion with no time left on the clock to defeat the Indiana Firebirds 36-35 in front of 7,691 home fans. The win gave the Destroyers sole possession of the 12th and final playoff spot. Quarterback Bob Bees, the fifth Buffalo starter of the season, threw for three touchdowns and 193 yards in his first AFL game since the 2000 season, when he played for the Oklahoma Wranglers. Offensive specialist Jarrail Jackson earned Ironman of the Game Honors with 111 all-purpose yards, one touchdown and 3.5 tackles. Jackson is looking to become only the second player in Buffalo's history to amass 2,000 all-purpose yards in a season. A win this week would move the Destroyers into a second-place tie with Detroit and just one game behind the Eastern Division-leading Las Vegas Gladiators. The Fury will look to rebound back from consecutive division losses, including last week's 58-45 setback to Las Vegas. Detroit was unable to overcome a 20-point, first-quarter deficit and fell to 1-3 in games against Eastern Division rivals. Quarterback Andy Kelly completed 25-of-42 passes for 252 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Kelly, who has thrown the most all-time passing touchdowns, ranks third in the AFL this season with 76 passing touchdowns. Detroit defensive specialist Ron Carpenter, who leads the Fury with 74.5 total tackles and three interceptions, returned nine kickoffs for 170 yards against the Gladiators. Carpenter, the four year veteran, needs only 108 more kickoff return yards to set a new AFL record. Detroit is looking for the series sweep in 2003 after defeating Buffalo earlier this season, 34-14. The Fury lead the all-time series 2-1. |
