LAS VEGAS, Nevada (Ticker) -- Todd Hammel came off the bench to lead a second half comeback, throwing four touchdown passes and running in another score to lead the Las Vegas Gladiators (8-8) past the Buffalo Destroyers (5-11), 55-38. Hammel, who was selected as the MVP of the game, replaced starter Jay McDonagh in the third quarter with Las Vegas trailing, 31-20. He then hit on all seven passes over the next three drives, ending with his second straight touchdown pass to Mike Horacek to give the Gladiators a 41-38 advantage. A touchdown catch by Sedrick Robinson and a scoring run from Hammel created the final margin as Las Vegas scored 28 straight points in the fourth and won for just the second time in six games. The defense keyed the comeback for the Gladiators, holding Buffalo scoreless in the fourth quarter by forcing turnovers on three consecutive drives. Hammel finished with 11 completions in 14 attempts and four touchdowns. Horacek had five catches for a team-high 79 yards and two clutch scores as Las Vegas topped the Destroyers for the second time this season. Bob Bees connected on 20 of 37 passes for 232 yards, five scores and two interceptions, both in the fourth quarter. On the first possession of the game for Buffalo, Bees fumbled and the ball was recovered by Frank Carter, who rumbled 11 yards for a touchdown to put the Gladiators on top, 10-0. Jarrail Jackson had a game-high nine catches for 146 yards and four scores and added 216 return yards for a total 365 all-purpose yards to lead the Destroyers. Jackson hauled in a 29-yard scoring pass from Bees to end the third quarter and put Buffalo ahead, 38-27, before the four unanswered scores from Las Vegas, which will travel to Arizona for the first round of the ArenaBowl playoffs next weekend. |
