Blue-ribbon matchup FSU's Warrick the ultimate challenge for Vols' defensePosted: Monday January 04, 1999 01:48 PM
Sports Illustrated senior writer Ivan Maisel chatted with CNNSI reporter Paul Crane at the Fiesta Bowl on Wednesday: Paul Crane: Wide receiver Peter Warrick was at his best in Florida State's biggest games. Against their eight opponents that were ranked in the Top 25 during the season, Warrick averaged six catches and over 120 yards and had 10 touchdowns in those games... Ivan Maisel: Paul, what makes Peter Warrick so dangerous is his ability to create space around himself. Seminoles offensive coordinator Mark Richt told me that Warrick doesn't stop to make a catch; his hands stop but the rest of him is constantly moving. And that ability to separate himself from the defender is what makes him so dangerous after the catch. Crane: Now, Tennessee's defense was solid all year against the run, but at times it was susceptible against the pass. It's hard imagine Tennessee winning this game without at least slowing Warrick down. How do they plan to do that? Maisel: By not changing very much. Steve Johnson, the Tennessee DB who gave up two long touchdown passes to Arkansas, said that the Vols will play man about 80 percent of the time. And defensive coordinator John Chavous confirmed that. Crane: You'd think that man-to-man coverage would bring a smile to the faces of Warrick and Marcus Outzen... Maisel: If the Vols are telling the truth... Crane: Of course, and pass rush will have a lot to do with pass coverage.
