Record: 12-0, 9-0 MAC
Coach: Bob Pruett, fourth year (49-4)
Top Off. Player: QB Chad Pennington (68.1 completion percentage, 3,515 yards, 34 TDs)
Top Def. Player: DL Girardie Mercer (four interceptions)
Season Summary:
The Herd rolled over their MAC brethren for the third straight year since joining the conference (and Division I-A). Out of conference, the Herd threw in an opening-week win over Clemson. Their heart and soul is Pennington, a likely NFL first-rounder next spring, but Doug Chapman is also a decent running back.

Coach: LaVell Edwards, 28th year (251-94-3)
Top Off. Player: QB Kevin Feterik (61.3 completion percentage, 3,553 yards, 25 TDs)
Top Def. Player: LB Rob "Freight Train" Morris (77 tackles, four sacks -- missed four games)
Season Summary:
Behind the dramatic improvement of Feterik and the emergence of freshman running back studs Luke Staley and Fahu Tahi, the Cougars raced out the gate with eight wins in nine games. The victims included Washington and Colorado State. But the season ended with painful losses to Wyoming and Utah
