Record: 9-2, 6-2 Big Ten
Coach: Lloyd Carr, fifth year, (48-13)
Top Off. Player: QB Tom Brady (61 percent completion rate, 2,217 yards, 16 TDs)
Top Def. Player: LB Dhani Jones (73 tackles)
Season Summary:
A two-game losing streak in October killed the Wolverines' national championship hopes, but Michigan rose out of obscurity to win its final four games and grab a BCS berth. Brady's gradual improvement helped stabilize the Wolverines down the stretch. They are successful when RB Anthony Thomas and WR David Terrell both have impacts.

  Record: 10-2, 8-1 SEC
Coach: Mike DuBose, third year (22-13)
Top Off. Player: RB Shaun Alexander (1,383 yards, 19 TDs)
Top Def. Player: LB Saleem Rasheed (84 tackles, three sacks)
Season Summary:
The '99 Tide were at first known largely for off-the-field drama, but that all changed when they knocked off Florida on Oct. 2, and again Dec. 4 for the SEC title. Alexander is their Mr. All-Everything, with significant help from playmaker Freddie Milons. The defense continues to play well despite injuries to three key starters at mid-season.
