NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Ricky Hall, Virginia Tech's leading punt returner, broke a bone in his left foot during practice Friday and likely will miss Tuesday's national championship game against top-ranked Florida State.

Dr. Duane Lagan, Virginia Tech's team physican, said it was "pretty doubtful" that Hall could play in the game.

Hall was injured midway through the second-ranked Hokies' practice at Tulane University. Lagan said Hall wants to play and that a protective device has been made for his foot, but the doctor wasn't optimistic, saying surgery may be required.

Hall returned 40 punts for 510 yards and a touchdown this season and also caught 25 passes for 398 yards and three touchdowns.
