Failed to live up to expectations last year as a still-young team; now the Sun Devils hope to show that 1997's finish wasn't a fluke.

Why it will workRecruiting class included 13 JUCO transfers, which should allow the Sun Devils to immediately shore up weak spots. Kealy and Redmond are among the best in the country at their positions.
Why it won'tThe defense -- especially the secondary, which allowed a conference-high 23 TD passes -- plays as poorly as it did last season.
