The Bear Market Baylor ('98: 2-9, 1-7 Big 12)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:04 PM
The Plot
Only six starters were lost, but following a 2-9 campaign, maybe that's not such a good thing. Tommie Frazier has come to town as an assistant, but the bad news is he's still the best quarterback on the field. The Bears only had four touchdown receptions and two 100-yard rushing games last season, and it's tough to say if they'll be improving much.
The DirectorKevin Steele -- first season
StarringQB Odell James -- If anyone can show James how to use athleticism in the pocket, it's Frazier.
Co-starringFB Derek Lagway -- Bowl-you-over runner with soft hands, Lagway should be the perfect backfield partner for James.CB Gary Baxter -- Eighteen passes broken up last season (second in the Big 12).
And introducingRB Ben Gay -- Fun for headline writers and Bears fans alike, high school All-America could be the solution at running back.
Why it will workIt won't. Baylor is not just changing coaches, it's changing direction, and until Steele has the personnel he wants for his system, the Bears are going nowhere.
