Welcome Back, Koetter Boise State ('98: 6-5, 2-3 Big West)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:05 PM
The Plot
When Dirk Koetter arrived in Boise, his intent was to open up the passing game. Well, the Broncos of '98 averaged nearly 60 yards more per game in the air than the Broncos of '97. Unfortunately, the top seven receivers from last season's depth chart are gone, so the challenge in '99 (in addition to replacing 1,000-yard runner Eron Hurley) will be to find some guys to catch the ball.
The DirectorDirk Koetter -- second year, 6-5Ensemble castOL Keith Dilworth -- All-conference first-teamer is regarded as one of the conference's few NFL prospects and the leader of a solid offensive line.LB Bryan Johnson -- All three starters return at linebacker and this two-time second-team Big West selection is the unit's best. QB Bart Hendricks -- After passing for 1,799 yards last season, he'll need to find some new receivers. Why it will workKoetter's system will be more familiar -- even if the players aren't -- and if the Broncos can compete offensively with Idaho and Nevada, they could make the jump to that level. Why it won'tDefensively, the Broncos showed some weakness stopping the pass (269.9 yards allowed in the air in '98), which is no way to beat the Big West's best teams. Our critics' review** |
