The Plot

By all indications, the Falcons are poised for their first winning season since going 9-2 in 1994. Though young at the skill positions, the talent is there, and the return of the entire offensive line will help tremendously. The defense will need to grow quickly, with only one expected senior starter.

The Director

Gary Blackney, ninth season, 53-35-2

Ensemble cast

RB Godfrey Lewis -- Ran for 775 yards as a freshman.
WR Kurt Gerling -- Emerged as one of the conference's most explosive receivers (19.3 yards a catch).
QB Ricky Schneider -- Needs to regain confidence after losing starting job midway through '98.
LB Joe O'Neill -- Defense's only senior starter, also its leading tackler last year.

And introducing

FB Eric Clark -- Sophomore fullback will be utilized for receiving skills.

Why it will work

Already promising running backs and receivers should be even better with age.

Why it won't

Defense leaves much to be desired, especially at line.
